New Structural Economics

New Structural Economics is a theory of economic development, transition and operation that is proposed and championed by Prof. Justin Yifu Lin and his collaborators. The starting point of analysis is factor endowments and their structure which is given at any specific time and changable over time. Guided by historical materialism, NSE applies the neoclassical approach to the study of the determinants of economic structure and their evoluation. It studies forces and relations of production (the base), including technology and industry, and their impact upon hard infrastructure and institutions (the superstructure) which determine the transaction costs. NSE maintains that developing countries or regions should develop industries that conform to their comparative advantages based on their factor endowments structure. It seeks synergies between an effective market and a facilitating government in an effort to achieve economic transformation and upgrading as well as economic and social development.

NSE Virtual Teaching and Research Section

Headed by Prof. Justin Yifu Lin, NSE Virtual Teaching and Research Section (VTRS) consists of 128 members, gathering the front-line teaching and research backbones from the 20 bases participating in the Top-Notch Student Cultivation Program 2.0 in Economics. It also includes members of the NSE Research Alliance nationwide, including national "Double First-Class" universities and top-notch teams responsible for national first-class courses, as well as outstanding representatives from universities with different school-running levels in the central and western China. The primary goal of NSE VTRS is to accelerate the building of a NSE theoretical framework with Chinese characteristics, style and manner and elevate NSE into a first-class discipline and cultivate outstanding talents. The core goal of VTRS construction is to develop high-caliber NSE teaching materials, courses, teaching teams, majors and research projects by innovating teaching and research methodologies, promoting academic innovation, enhancing research and development of educational materials, developing top-quality courses, sharing premium resources and conducting teacher training.
