KEY POINTS

The presentation was initially made by Dr. Zeufack at the State of the Africa Region seminar, a flagship event organized by the World Bank’s Africa region in Washington D.C. , the U.S. on April 22, 2017. Key points of the presentation are:

  • There are signs of recovery, but Africa is not out of the woods yet.
  • It is imperative to implement sound macroeconomic and structural reforms to reverse the decline and  boost domestic and foreign investment in Africa.
  • African countries must seize the moment and work with the international community to crowd-in investment funding.

Mr. Shuilin Wang would also join the event and may answer questions related to cooperation and partnership between WB and China in Africa.


SPEAKERS

Dr. Albert G. Zeufack

Dr. Albert G. Zeufack, a Cameroonian national, is the World Bank’s Chief Economist for Africa. Prior to his appointment in May 2016, he was Practice Manager in the Macroeconomics and Fiscal Management Global Practice and Leader of the World Bank-wide Community of Practice for the Management of Natural Resources Rents. His main research interest is in the micro-foundations of macroeconomics.

Dr. Zeufack joined the World Bank in 1997 as a Young Professional and started his career as a research economist in the Macroeconomics Division of the Research Department. Since then, he has held several positions in Africa, East Asia and Pacific, Europe and Central Asia regions. Between 2008 and 2012, on leave from the World Bank, he was the Director of Research and Investment Strategy/Chief Economist for Khazanah Nasional Berhad, a Malaysian Sovereign Wealth Fund.

Dr. Zeufack received his Ph.D. in Economics from CERDI, the University of Clermont-Ferrand (France) where he taught before joining the World Bank. He holds a Master Degree in Economic Analysis and Policy from the University of Yaoundé (Cameroon) and has received Executive Education from Harvard University and Stanford University. Dr. Zeufack is a Member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Natural Resource Charter in Oxford University, a Member of the Advisory Board of the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), a Member of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Network, and a Member of the Board of the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). In 2016, Jeune Afrique nominated him as one of the “50 Africans who mattered in 2016.”

Shuilin WANG

Shuilin Wang, a Chinese National, is the adviser for Africa External Communications and Partnerships and regional coordinator for Partnership with China in the Africa Region of the World Bank. Previously he was as lead private sector specialist at Africa Region’s FPD. He also served as adviser to the Global Infrastructure Facility (GIF) task team (2013-15). He joined the World Bank since January 2002 and served respectively as a special adviser for the then Chief Economist Nick Stern, and Senior Economist at DECRG. In late 2007, he returned to China and worked at the China Investment Corporation (CIC), serving as managing director and spokesman. Prior to the year 2002, he worked in the Chinese Government for over 20 years in various government departments. He served as a director general at the State Council Office for Economic and Structure Reform from 1997 to 2001. He graduated from French ENA and Harvard JFK, and was appointed by the Chinese Government into the prestigious nationwide talent acquisition program - the Thousand Talent Program – in 2010.

The New Structural Economics & International Development Forum was initiated in March 2016 and is organized by the Center for New Structural Economics (CNSE) at Peking University. The Center aspires to advance the frontier research on structural change and help developing countries to promote economic structural transformation. The Forum aims to bridge the gap between research and practice by hosting high-profile, open and equal conversations among scholars, professionals, policy makers and entrepreneurs in the field of international development.
