2024-11-26
On November 22, 2024, the Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University was awarded the inaugural Belt and Road International Cooperation Award at the 21st Global Annual Meeting of the International Finance Forum (IFF).
The award was jointly initiated this year by the International Finance Forum (IFF) and the Silk Road International Alliance (SRIA). It is a global recognition aimed at honoring international institutions and innovative cooperation projects that have actively participated in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The award is presented to entities that have demonstrated outstanding achievements in advancing international cooperation under the BRI, particularly in promoting policy coordination, infrastructure connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bonds. It calls on various stakeholders to contribute new insights and experiences to the recovery of the global economy, the improvement of global governance, and the achievement of sustainable development.
In recent years, the International Development Cooperation Department of INSE, guided by the theory of New Structural Economics and adhering to the "integration of knowledge and action" philosophy, has been actively assisting governments of developing countries in formulating development strategies, participating in top-level design, and providing policy advice. At the same time, through a systematic framework of "industry identification—industrial park planning—investment promotion", the team have helped guide high-quality Chinese enterprises in "going global" to support the industrialization and economic transformation of developing countries, achieving win-win outcomes for all parties involved. The International Development Cooperation Department has successfully advanced country-specific consultancy projects in countries such as Djibouti, Benin, Guinea, Senegal, Nigeria and Uzbekistan, contributing to the deeper and more effective implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative. It has also continuously deepened collaborations with domestic and international organizations such as the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Winning the Belt and Road International Cooperation Award is a recognition of the efforts and achievements of INSE in related field over the years. The award and its ceremony have received extensive coverage from over 30 domestic and international media outlets, including Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, Reuters, and Guangming Online.
The International Finance Forum (IFF), which serves as the awarding body, was founded in October 2003 through the joint efforts of G20 nations, as well as institutions like the United Nations, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), alongside prominent leaders. It acts as a high-level permanent dialogue mechanism and multilateral cooperation platform in the global financial sector, earning it the nickname "F20 (Finance 20)" in the realm of global finance. This year's annual conference attracted over 200 financial and political leaders, representatives from financial institutions, experts, scholars, and industry delegates from more than 50 countries and regions, as well as international organizations. Among the attendees were former South Korean Prime Minister Han Seung-soo, former New Zealand Prime Minister Jenny Shipley, and Zhou Xiaochuan, former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and former Governor of the People's Bank of China. John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, sent a congratulatory letter. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, Honorary President of the European Council and former Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy, and WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala delivered video addresses.
