2024-11-20
The "Global South" Media and Think Tank Forum was held in São Paulo, Brazil from November 11-12. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sent congratulatory messages to the event. Dr. Yu Jia, Director of the Department of International Development Cooperation of INSE, was invited to attend as a think tank representative and delivered a speech titled "The Rise of the Global South and China's Responsibility".
In her speech, Dr. Yu Jia cited data from institutions such as the World Bank and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to illustrate the increasingly significant international status of Global South countries and the reality of their rise. She analyzed this from dimensions such as total population, economic output, economic growth rate, and per capita income. Dr. Yu also emphasized the strong similarities and shared understanding between China and other developing countries in terms of historical experiences, struggles, and development goals. She noted that China's development experiences and model could provide valuable insights for the progress of the Global South. Furthermore, she pointed out that against the backdrop of China accelerating the establishment of a new development paradigm and advancing high-quality Belt and Road construction, China and the world share greater development opportunities.
Subsequently, Dr. Yu Jia introduced the New Structural Economics theory, distilled from China's development experience, and its application in policy-making across numerous developing countries to the attending guests. She emphasized that in the future, China could provide practical new technologies to developing countries through the green Belt and Road Initiative, helping them avoid replicating the traditional paths taken by developed countries. This approach would enable social and economic progress at a lower environmental cost, jointly fostering a greener foundation for the BRI construction and the development of human society with the broader Global South.
The forum was organized under the guidance of the Information Office of the State Council of China and co-hosted by Xinhua News Agency and Brazil Communication Company. It aimed to provide a platform for "Global South" media and think tanks to discuss shared contemporary issues, paving the way for deeper future cooperation and creating new opportunities. Approximately 350 representatives from 170 media organizations, think tanks, government agencies, and enterprises across more than 70 countries and regions participated in the event.
