A Dialogue between Prof. Justin Yifu Lin and Mr. Bill Gates

24th, March 2017,  Peking University, welcomed the renowned philanthropist- Mr. Bill Gates, to its historic campus where he delivered a lecture titled “Looking into the future: Innovation, Philanthropy and Global Leadership.”

At the event, Prof. Justin Yifu Lin, former Chief Economist of the World Bank and Honorary Dean of the Institute of South South Cooperation and Development (ISSCAD), Peking University; welcomed Mr. Gates to the podium, moderated question and answer session along with discussions centered around topical global issues with emphasis on affordable and quality healthcare, education, renewable energy and software development.

 

In his address, Mr. Gates who has been visiting Peking University for more than 2 decades described China as a country “with a quest for excellence, not only trying to improve itself but to contribute to the whole world”. He commended China for strengthening Africa’s economic capacity.

Mr. Gates saluted China for playing an active role in the promotion and development of green technologies, saying “China is one of the world leaders in renewable energy.” Mr. Gates disclosed that with the support of other investors, he would invest $1bn in the development of early stage energy technology so that best ideas can be moved from the research laboratory to the marketplace.

 

He submitted that everyone must strive to make the world a better place either in cash or in kind. He praised Chinese entrepreneurs who according to him are taking active steps to get involved in philanthropy and give back to the society. Mr. Gates asserted that the life of the most vulnerable in the society can be made better when people learn about topics that relates to the less privilege, lend voice to contemporary issues; all of which requires considerable time volunteering.

 

Mr. Gates, in his advice to the youth-laden audience, said: “This is a pretty incredible time to be a young person in China. Your generation’s entrance into the workforce will coincide with your country’s rise as a center of global progress and innovation.” He encouraged students to adjust themselves and learn the dynamics of innovation, technology and software developments.

 

On his part, Prof. Justin Lin, the proponent of New Structural Economics pointed out that government in a market economy must play a facilitating and intelligent role in the process of economic development and reiterated that “Mr. Gates recognize that market alone, will not and cannot address all the issues.”

 

Prof. Lin expressed his admiration for the philosophy of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and their commitment to provide solution to the multi-faceted challenges of the world in a holistic way.
