Even though the Chinese private sector’s contribution to overall economic growth and development has steadily increased during the past three decades, small and mid-size companies frequently under-perform compared to their counterparts in Western economies. Two important explanations for this persistently sub-par performance by Chinese firms are (i) limited or no access to medium and long-term capital in the state-dominated financial sector, and (ii) a shortage of value creating business expertise. Drawing on research conducted for his recently published book,Private Equity Investing in Emerging Markets: Opportunities for Value Creation*, Professor Leeds lecture will demonstrate the distinctive capacity of private equity investors to selectively provide both scarce financial resources and value creating expertise that Chinese middle market companies require to grow and compete. Professor Leeds’ lecture will also highlight a characteristic of China’s private equity industry that distinguishes it from virtually all other countries: the government’s active role in promoting private equity as a positive force for China’s overall growth and development.
