Seminar Abstract
"Europe's Triple Transformation: Evolving To Answer New Challenges". Faced with the triple challenge of military conflict, trade disputes and the rise of populist parties, Europe is has to change in order to remain itself. This talk by Prof. Matteo Garavoglia (Tsinghua University and University of Oxford) will explore the pan-European response, the national responses and the opportunities for the Sino-European relationship within the context of each one of these three challenges.
Speaker Bio
Matteo GARAVOGLIA is Professor of Practice at the Department of International Relations and Research Director at the Center for China - EU Relations at Tsinghua University in Beijing. At the same time, he is also Senior Research Associate at the University of Oxford's SEESOX Programme (European Studies Centre, St. Antony's College) and Research Fellow at the Barcelona Institute of International Studies (IBEI). His research work focuses on European integration, the European public sphere, European foreign policy and EU - China relations.
Dr. Garavoglia's research focuses on the evolving dynamics of European integration, the development of a pan-European public sphere, and the impact of domestic politics on supranational policy-making within the European Union. He examines how these internal transformations shape the EU's external actions, with a particular emphasis on European foreign policy and EU–China relations. His work also explores the geopolitical consequences of populism, EU governance reform, and the interplay between national politics and regional cooperation frameworks.
Dr. Garavoglia has engaged directly in international affairs, working with the United Nations in Latin America, the OSCE in Central Asia, and in emergency medical assistance in West Africa. His insights have been featured by media outlets including Bloomberg, CNN, Foreign Affairs, and the Washington Post.
