【ABSTRACT】 A non-technical in-depth overview and discussion of the key issues and challenges in the aid effectiveness literature so far and also in the context of more recent developments at the global level. Thus, the lecture will not be based on a particular paper but it will provide a critical assessment of the aid effectiveness literature, offering at the same time useful policy insights on the way forward in the important research and policy area of foreign aid in an era of global development challenges.


【SPEAKER】


George Mavrotas Dr. George Mavrotas (PhD University of Oxford) is a leading development economist with more than 25 years of experience in international development. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow with the Development Strategy and Governance Division of the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington DC and the Program Leader of the Nigeria Strategy Support Program in the IFPRI Abuja Office where he directs IFPRI’s research and capacity building program in Nigeria. Other current honorary appointments include Visiting Professor at the Institute of Development Policy and Management, University of Antwerp, and Senior Fellow at the Foundation for International Development Study and Research (Ferdi, France). Previous appointments include Chief Economist of the Global Development Network (GDN) and Senior Fellow and Project Director at the World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations University (UNU-WIDER) and prior to that on the Economics Faculties of the Universities of Oxford and Manchester where he taught for many years having also supervised 12 PhD theses and 37 Master’s dissertations on abroad range of development topics. He also taught at the Universities of Helsinki (Finland), CERDI-Auvergne (Clermont-Ferrand, France) and Antwerp(Belgium). He has an extensive developing country experience (particularly in Africa and Asia) and very substantial experience as an advisor to various international organizations, donor and government agencies, and the broad policy making community and extensive exposure to high level policy debates in international development. He has also been a member of various international committees of leading experts in international development.


【COMMENTATOR】

Xu Xiuli Dr. Xu Xiuli is a professor of Development Studies at China Agricultural University. She is a key member of China International Development Research Network (CIDRN) and Network of Southern Think Tanks (NeST). Her main research interests are development-related issues including China’s overseas investment and foreign aid, particularly in African and Asian countries, the evolution of development thinking, and developmental state building in African countries. She is the first author of a series of articles on the nature and daily operation of China’s aid and overseas investment published on some top journals such as World Development, Development and Change and IDS Bulletin. She has broad international collaboration with development partners such as the WB, UNDP, IDRC, DFID and Oxfam. She is the initiator of the public knowledge platform: IDT (International Development Times), which disseminates frontier debates about development studies in China.





The New Structural Economics & International Development Forum


The New Structural Economics & International Development Forum was initiated in March 2016 and is co-organized by the Center for New Structural Economics (CNSE) and the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development(ISSCAD) at Peking University. The Center aspires to advance the frontier research on structural change and help developing countries to promote economic structural transformation. The Forum aims to bridge the gap between research and practice by hosting high-profile, open and equal conversations among scholars, professionals, policy makers and entrepreneurs in the field of international development.
