Advisors of the 2019 NSE Summer School(Alphabetical Order)

 

Wen Chen

Wen Chen, Researcher at the Institute of New Structural Economics, Peking University. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Groningen and worked as post-doc at the same University. His research interests include economic growth and development, intangible capital and global value chains. He has multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and participated in research projects commissioned by international organizations, such as the WIPO and OECD.

 

Bo Hu

Bo Hu, Assistant Professor at the Institute of New Structural Economics, Peking University. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Indiana University, Bloomington. His primary research interests include econometrics and macroeconomics. He focuses on time series and functional data analysis, their applications in macroeconomics and finance, and the Chinese economy reform. He teaches Financial Econometrics and Time Series Econometrics at Peking University.

 

Bin Huang

Bin Huang, Research fellow and Director of the Domestic Think Tank Department of the Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University. His main job is to organize domestic think tank to carry out policy research practices based on New Structural Economics theory and submit relevant policy proposals. He obtained PhD in Human Geography from Peking University. His research fields are Regional Economics and Urban Economics. His recent research topics include industrial policies, digital economy, regional industrial structural transformation and upgrading and, as well as middle-income traps. He publishes papers on Urban Studies, Tourism Research, etc. He was a research fellow at Development Research Center of the State Council (2012-2018), and participated/hosted in many important national research topics such as New Urbanization, New Growth Momentum of China's Economic Development, Comprehensively Deepening Reforms, the Coordinated Development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, and the Improvement of China's Original Creative Ability. The policy research topics he is currently hosting include Targeted Poverty Alleviation, Resource-based Regional Transformation, Transformation and Upgrading of Less Advaned regions, and Reconstruction of New Economic Industrial Policies.

 

Li Hui

Li Hui, Post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of New Structural Economics, Peking University. She works here as a core member of the domestic think-tank team that aims to enhance industrial upgrading and structural change in China. Obtaining her PHD in Economics from Wuhan University in July 2016, she focuses her research on new structural economics, industrial economics, and environmental economics. Current research topics include structural transformation and industrial policy, Environmental regulation and economic growth.

 

Shenzhe Jiang

Shenzhe Jiang, Assistant Professor at the Institute of New Structural Economics, Peking University. He obtained his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in 2017. His research is in the field of Macroeconomics. He currently focuses on studies of dynamic contract, asset pricing and monetary economics.

 

Jiandong Ju

Jiandong Ju is a Unigroup Chair Professor at the PBC School of Finance, Tsinghua University and Changjiang Scholar of the Chinese Ministry of Education. After receiving his doctorate in Economics from Pennsylvania State University in 1995, he served as an assistant, associate and full professor at University of Oklahoma and professor at school of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University. He was the dean of International School of Business Administration, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics from 2014-2017. He was a resident scholar at the International Monetary Fund, and did consulting for the World Bank and other policy organizations. He focused his research on International Trade, International Finance and Industrial Organizations. His main teaching courses are Advanced International Trade and Finance. His work has been published in American Economic Review, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Monetary Economics, American Economic Journal and other journals.

 

Chenmei Li

Research fellow at the International Development Department of INSE. She is master of development economics from the Academy of Social Development at Erasmus University. She was a research assistant at the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Roterdam, and a project intern of China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges.

 

Jiewei Li

Research fellow at the Domestic Think Tank Department of INSE. He was master of economics from the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics. He was Barcelona Graduate School of Economics,Alumni of the class of institution analysis at the Ronald Coase Institute. He was an intern at the Survey and Research center for China Household Finance, and participated in the survey of China Household Finance, Survey of China Small and Micro Enterprises. His research area is institutional economics, development economics and applied micro economics.

 

Justin Yifu Lin

Justin Yifu LIN, Dean of Institute of New Structural Economics, Dean of Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development and Professor and Honorary Dean of National School of Development at Peking University. He was the Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank, 2008-2012. Prior to this, Mr. Lin served for 15 years as Founding Director and Professor of the China Centre for Economic Research (CCER) at Peking University. He is Councilor of the State Council and a member of the Standing Committee,. Chinese People’s Political Consultation Conference. He is the author of more than 20 books including Beating the Odd: Jump-starting Developing Countries; Going Beyond Aid: Development Cooperation for Structural Transformation, the Quest for Prosperity: How Developing Economies Can Take Off, New Structural Economics: A Framework for Rethinking Development and Policy, Against the Consensus: Reflections on the Great Recession, and Demystifying the Chinese Economy. He is a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for Developing World.

 

Changzheng Liu

Changzheng Liu, Director of Enterprise Development Department, Senior Operations Officer of the Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University. He obtained his Ph.D degree in financial management from Peking University, master of management from European university of France, bachelor of economics from Peking University. He has worked in government departments, large state-owned enterprise groups, private listed companies and other institutions, and has rich practical experience in the industry.

 

Célestin Monga

Célestin Monga is the Vice President and Chief Economist of the African Development Bank Group.He has various senior management positions in academic, financial and development institutions. Before joining the African Development Bank, he was the managing director at the United Nations Industrial Development Organizations(UNIDO) and Senior Economic Advisor/director at the World Bank. Prior to these positions, he was Head of Department at Banque Nationale de Paris Group, served on the Board of Directors of the Sloan School of Management Fellowship Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT), and taught economics at Boston University and at the University of Bordeaux. A pro bono visiting professor of economics at the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne and Peking University. Dr. Monga is the author if numerous publications on various aspects of economic and political development. His books have been translated into several languages and are widely used as textbooks by academic institutions around the world.

 

His recent works include the Oxford Handbook of Structural Transformation(Oxford University Press,2019); Beating the Odds: Jump-Starting Developing Countries(Princeton University Press,2017); Oxford Handbook of Africa and Economics in two volumes(2015), all three books with Justin Yifu Lin; and Nihilism and Negritude: Ways of Living in Africa(Harvard University Press,2016). Dr. Monga is a graduate of MIT, Harvard University and the Universities of Paris and Pau.

 

Xin Wang

Xin Wang, Assistant professor at the Institute of New Structural Economics, Peking University. She earned Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2016 and her bachelor's degree in Economics and Statistics from Peking University in 2011. Her research interests include international trade, development economics and labor economics. Her research mainly focuses on the interrelationship between international trade, labor market and structural transformation. Currently, she is working on the impacts of development strategy on international capital flows, trade-induced structural change, institutions, and other economic outcomes.

 

Yong Wang

Yong Wang, Associate Professor of Economics and Academic Deputy Dean of the Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University. He obtained PhD in Economics from University of Chicago, where he won the Martin and Margaret Lee Prize in Price Theory.  His research fields are Growth and Development, Macroeconomics, Political Economy, China and India Economies. His recent research topics include structural change, industry dynamics, industrial policies, China’s state-owned enterprises reform, and middle-income trap. He was a resident research fellow at the World Bank (2010-2011). He publishes academic papers on Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Monetary Economics, etc. and serves as a co-editor for China and the World Economy (SSCI). He is the author of  "Thinking and Debates on New Structural Economics" and " Industrial Policies:  Summary, Reflection and Prospect"  (both by the Peking University Press). Yong has been invited to present his research at policy institutions including IMF, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, US Department of State, US Department of Treasury, US Trade Commission, Federal Reserve Bank , People’s Bank of China, NDRC, and Korean Institute of Finance.  He won the Young Chinese Economist 2017 Award and the Inaugural Peikang Chang Young Economist Award in Development Economics in 2018.

 

Xinyue Wu

She is a research fellow at the international development and cooperation department if INSE at Peking University. She is a master of economics from the Kings College at London University. She has participated in consulting projects of some African and Asian countries at the International Think Tank at INSE. Her main field of interest is development finance, infrastructure financing at industrial park, global value chain of international buyers.

 

Junjie Xia

Junjie Xia, Assistant professor at the Institute of New Structural Economics, Peking University. He is an applied macroeconomist and currently working on the topics of Macro-finance; automation, labor share and industrial upgrading; skill premium and exporting dynamics; inequality. He received his Ph.D. in Economics degree from the University of Southern California in 2017.

 

Jiajun Xu

Jiajun Xu, Assistant Professor and the Executive Deputy Dean of the Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University. Xu worked in the United Nations and World Bank and currently acts as the General Secretary of the Global Research Consortium on Economic Structural Transformation (GReCEST). Her research focuses on development financing and global economic governance. She has published in top academic journals in the field of international development such as Journal of International Development and Institute of Development Studies Bulletin. She is the guest editor of China Economic Review and the lead author of Global Development Financing Report (2015). Her academic monograph Beyond US Hegemony in International Development was published by Cambridge University Press in 2017. She has led several policy-oriented development projects aimed at leveraging special economic zones to achieve structural transformation in developing countries such as Benin, Djibouti and Nigeria. Xu holds a DPhil (PhD) from the University of Oxford.

 

Jianye Yan

Jianye Yan is an associate professor of economics in the Institute of New Structural Economics (INSE) at Peking University. Before joining in INSE, he was an associate professor at the School of Banking and Finance, University of International Business and Economics. He earned his PhD from the Toulouse School of Economics; previously he obtained master from Peking University and bachelor from Nanjing University. His research is in the fields of applied microeconomics, industrial organization, mechanism design and Chinese economy. Among sub-fields of new structural economics, he participates the research in finance and development, industrial organization, energy and environment, transition and reform of enterprises, incentives and regulation, applied econometrics and new-structured general-equilibrium theory. He has published papers at American Economic Journal: Microeconomics, Journal of Public Economics, Energy Economics, Economic Inquiry, Economics Letters and Journal of Economics and received 2019 best paper award from American Economic Association.

 

Zirong Yang

Zirong Yang, Part-time researcher at the Institute of New Structural Economics, Peking University, Assistant researcher of Institute of World Economics and Politics Chinese Academy of Social Science. He received his Ph.D in Economics from Wuhan University in 2016, then worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute of New Structural Economics. His research mainly focuses on financial development and structure, international finance.

 

Jia Yu

Jia YU, Director of International Development Cooperation Department, Senior Operations Officer. She is responsible for the application of New Structural Economics to the international investment practice. Previously, Dr. YU worked more than 8 years for State Power Investment Corp. (SPIC) International Minerals & Investment Co., Ltd as the director of the Dept. of Business Development & Public Relations. She was responsible for overseas energy and mining investment, public relations at a corporate level, global resources market research, China’s outward FDI policy, as well as empirical studies at a macro level. Before joining SPIC, Dr. YU started her career as a consultant for the utility industry with Accenture. Dr. YU graduated from Peking University with a double major in French and Economics and received a scholarship from the French government to continue her studies in France. Dr. YU has obtained two Masters’ degrees, one in Development Economics and another one in Project Management, both at CERDI-CNRS in France, where she also received her PhD in Development Economics. Her research fields focus on Chinese “Go Global” empirical studies, Industrial Park and Special Economic Zones (SEZ) diagnosis, China's overseas investment and the interaction of the manufacturing, energy and mining sector as well as their roles in the process of industrialization for Belt & Road countries. Dr. YU is a consultant to the Asian Development Bank and she is also the first representative of the People’s Republic of China to be nominated for the “Future Energy Leader” (FEL) by the World Energy Council. She is a global board member of the FEL and was a key member of its development committee (2015-2017).

 

Qiuyun Zhao

Qiuyun Zhao, Domestic think tank postdoctoral fellow of the Institute of New Structural Economics. He holds a Ph.D degree from Peking University. He has published more than 20 papers in the "China Economist", "financial research" and other domestic and foreign core academic journals published. He won domestic and foreign prize more than 30 awards, includes the National Economics postdoctoral academic forum one Award, Tan Chongtai development economics scholarship, Shanghai Young Economist Forum second prize. Has repeatedly participated in the National Social Science Fund, the National Science Foundation, the National Natural Science Foundation of China major projects and local government think tank projects. Research areas: income distribution of elements, Labor Economics of New Structural and Research on Basic Theory of New Structural Economics.

 

Jie Zheng

Jie Zheng, postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of New Structural Economics, Peking University. Ph.D in Management, Beijing Forestry University, China. Research Interests: New structural environmental economics. 

 

Lijun Zhu

Lijun Zhu, Assistant professor at the Institute of New Structural Economics, Peking University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis in 2018. His main research interest lies within the field of macroeconomics and particularly focused on economic growth and development, and income distribution. His current research topics include: causes and consequences of the rising concentration and markup in the United States, informal finance and entrepreneurship in China, and the role of opening to trade in promoting China’s growth and economic efficiency.
