【Abstract】

Digitalization can provide new opportunities for industrialization in developing countries if these countries can leverage data on market demand for design and production decisions. The rising importance of developing countries in the global economy increases the value of data on their demand patterns. Digitalization facilitates translating these data into intangible assets. It also makes it easier and cheaper to use these data for design and production. Using the framework of value chains and drawing on insights from recent trade theory on firm and product heterogeneity, the paper discusses channels through which these mechanisms can boost industrialization. It also highlights required support from adjusting innovation, industrial and regulatory policies to a digital world.

The NSE & International Development Forum

The New Structural Economics & International Development Forum was initiated in March 2016 and is co-organized by the Institute of New Structural Economics (INSE) and the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development (ISSCAD) at Peking University. The Institute aspires to advance the frontier research on structural change and help developing countries to promote economic structural transformation. The Forum aims to bridge the gap between research and practice by hosting high-profile, open and equal conversations among scholars, professionals, policy makers and entrepreneurs in the field of international development.
